What I Was Thinking: The First Time I Saw Gatsby

I still remembered the scene when I first time saw Gatsby. I was returning from Tom and Daisy’s home after dinner, and when I came back, I saw a shadow on my neighbor’s lawn. I was pretty sure it was Gatsby even though I had never seen him before. Gatsby was so mysterious that I felt no one really knew him well, even those people who came to his party every day. Everyone was curious about his story and where his money came from, and certainly I was no exception. Gatsby stood with a back towards me, so I could not see his face. I was wondering what his face looked like: was he handsome, or was he just like an average person. It seemed that Gatsby was overlooking something on the sea. I was not sure what he was looking at, but all I could see from my position was a green light emitted from the end of Buchanan’s dock. It was not a big strong light, and in my eyes there was nothing special. I did not know why the light was so attractive to Gatsby that he could stand there for that long just staring at it, or maybe he was looking at something I could not see. I felt like there were a lot of stories hidden behind, but I just stopped thinking of him and returned back my home. Gatsby and I were different kinds of people in almost every way, so I did not think we would have any connection except living close. To me, he was just a wealthy new neighbor who might have not noticed me so far, and I did not plan to pay much attention on him either.
